Our Vision

  • To be the premiere organization promoting air and waste management within our geographical region.

Our Mission

  • To promote the advancement of knowledge relating to air and waste management issues.

  • To provide a forum for the exchange of information on these issues.

  • To provide professional development opportunities for its members.

  • To further the objectives of the A&WMA.

Our Origins

  • The Association originated after a Detroit meeting in 1906 of smoke inspectors from 13 cities in Canada and the United States. During this 3 day meeting the 55 participants decided to form the International Society for the Prevention of Smoke. The first meeting of the ISPS was held in Milwaukee in 1907, thus forming the Organization.

  • Over the years, the name changed to reflect the focus of the times. In 1915, we became the Smoke Prevention Association of America; in 1950, the Air Pollution Control Association. In 1988, we took our present name, the Air & Waste Management Association.
