PNWIS/A&WMA 38th Annual Conference
November 4-6, 1998
Portland, Oregon
Plenary Session 1:30-3:00PM
"Environmental Sustainability: Building on Twentieth Century Successes"
This year's keynote program is unusual in that three highly experienced regulators will offer their perspectives on environmental progress and the path to a "sustainable" future. The speakers represent more than 50 years of experience in the U.S. and Canada at the local, state, and national levels. The keynote program will provide a rare opportunity to hear forthright discussion of environmental progress as seen from the PNWIS region. Our speakers include:
James Nolan, Puget Sound Air Pollution Control Agency, Seattle, Washington
Mr. Nolan has more than twenty years experience in air pollution control at one of the most active and effective local agencies in the nation. He will provide a broad perspective on traditional approaches to air pollution control and how these succeeded (or not) in conference our needs.
Ken Stubbs, Greater Vancouver Regional District, Vancouver, British Columbia
Mr. Stubbs will speak from more than 25 years of environmental experience both as a consultant and regulator. He will provide his view of the progress made in the greater Vancouver area and Canada in general. Alternative approaches to regulation in Canada and the relative level of success will be compared with the U.S. model.
Fred Hansen, Tri-Met, Portland, Oregon
Mr. Hansen was formerly the Director of the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and Deputy Director of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency prior to his current position of as Director of Tri-Met, the public transportation service agency for the Portland metropolitan area. Fred brings an extremely broad perspective to the discussion of our environmental progress. His discussion will compare the national viewpoint to state agency realities. He will also discuss the priorities he brought to the management team of the U.S. EPA.
